Community Transport: The Difference Behind Every Journey
Every journey has a destination, but the real impact often extends far beyond getting from A to B. Community transport helps people access healthcare, stay connected to their communities, maintain their independence and take part in opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.
The journeys may be different, but the outcome is often the same: people remaining connected to the services, opportunities and communities that are important to them.
Helping People Access Healthcare
For Susan, one of the service users, having reliable transport to NHS appointments made a significant difference.
Getting to appointments isn’t always straightforward, particularly when mobility, health conditions or limited transport options create additional challenges. Community transport provided Susan with a dependable service, helping her attend important appointments with confidence and peace of mind.
What stood out most was the support she received along the way.
“The drivers are always so kind and helpful. It takes away the worry and gives me confidence that I can get to my appointments.”
Susan’s story highlights an important truth. Access to healthcare doesn’t begin when someone arrives at a hospital, surgery or clinic. It begins with being able to get there.
As neighbourhood health and prevention become increasingly important, community transport continues to play a vital role in helping people access the care and support they need.
Opening Doors to New Opportunities
Community transport doesn’t just support access to services. It also creates opportunities.
Through a partnership involving The Box Moor Trust, transport enabled groups of young refugees to take part in outdoor activities and experiences that would otherwise have been difficult to access.
The ability to travel meant access to new environments, new experiences and opportunities to build friendships and connections.
As The Box Moor Trust reflected:
“We wouldn’t be able to deliver these sessions without transport and are very grateful for the support provided.”
It’s a powerful reminder that transport can be about much more than reaching a destination. It can create opportunities, support inclusion and help people feel connected to their local community.
Staying Connected to What Matters
Community transport also helps people stay connected to the activities, friendships and communities they value.
A previous minibus service supporting churchgoers enabled older residents to continue attending services and spending time with fellow members of their faith community.
While the service itself is no longer operating, it remains a powerful example of the wider impact transport can have.
For those using the service, transport wasn’t simply a way to reach a destination. It was a way to maintain friendships, preserve routines and continue participating in a community that was important to them.
One passenger explained:
“Without the minibus, I wouldn’t have been able to attend. It meant I could carry on seeing familiar faces and remain part of the community.”
At a time when loneliness and social isolation continue to affect many people, these connections matter more than ever.
Supporting Everyday Independence
The impact of community transport can be seen in many different ways across Dacorum.
Alongside journeys to healthcare appointments and community activities, services such as Door2Store help residents access essential shopping and maintain their independence. Community transport also supports school and group travel, helping people access activities and opportunities within their communities.
Every Journey Tells a Story
Susan’s story is about accessing healthcare with confidence.
The work with The Box Moor Trust shows how transport can open doors to new experiences, opportunities and connections.
The church minibus service demonstrated how a simple journey can help people stay connected to friendships, familiar faces and the communities that matter most.
Each story is different, but they all point to the same thing.
Community transport changes what is possible.
It helps people get to appointments they couldn’t otherwise reach. It enables participation in activities they might otherwise miss. It helps people maintain independence, stay connected and continue living the lives they want to lead.
For some, it’s access to healthcare.
For others, it’s access to opportunity.
For many, it’s the reassurance that they can remain connected to the people and places that are important to them.
That’s the impact behind every journey.
And it’s why community transport continues to be such an important part of building healthier, more connected and inclusive communities across Hertfordshire.
