What is The Repair Shed?

hemel-repair-day-2 img_2580

The Repair Shed is Community Action Dacorum’s newest project. Hosted by Sunnyside Rural Trust at their Hemel Food Garden site in central Hemel Hempstead, it brings men aged 50+ together to stay healthier and happier for longer through making, mending and learning.

At certain life-changing stages in their lives - unemployment, retirement, bereavement, moving house etc – older men can become disconnected and isolated, particularly where their identity and interests have been tied up with paid work.

They say ‘men don’t talk face-to-face, they talk shoulder-to-shoulder’. With this in mind, The Repair Shed aims to offer a friendly and supportive place for men who enjoy ‘tinkering’ and want to help establish the project as an environmental social enterprise.

We are delighted to announce that The Repair Shed is one of ten projects across the country being supported for the next 12 months by the WRAP Innovation in Waste Prevention Fund. The award will enable:

-Increased access: We have extended the opening hours of the Wednesday session of the repair shed. On both Wednesday and Thursday the sessions run from 10am to 3pm and we are now recruiting for new volunteer members. The initiative is aimed primarily, but not exclusively, at men aged 50+

-Keeping materials out of landfill: Shed members will reclaim materials from domestic and business sources to make unique and unusual products

-Free repairs for Dacorum residents: Bring broken items to free Community Repair Days to learn how to mend them

-Keeping items in use for longer: An affordable repair service will help save money and the environment

-Learning for all: Sharing skills in home repairs, DIY, and re-use

Are you a NIPPER (or do you know one?)

You’ve heard about NEETs – young people who are ‘Not in Employment Education of Training’? Well, we’re looking for NIPPERS – older men who are either Not In Permanent Paid Employment or Retired.

It takes all sorts to make a Repair Shed member, but a ‘typical NIPPER’ is likely to be a man aged 50+, with a practical mind and an interest in mending, making and learning. Our NIPPERS have low support needs but could be getting over personal difficulties – associated with work or family relationships maybe – and looking for a friendly set-up to do so.  If you know someone who fits this description, get in touch for a chat.

Are you looking for original handmade gifts for homes and gardens?

Check out our Repair Shed Shop for unusual items made to order from reclaimed materials - including a candle holder, garden lanterns, a coat rack, pallet pub and a chair that's also a set of steps.
